new cable modem slower - why?

I purchased a new cable modem (Motorola SB5100) to replace my old 3Com,
which was Docsis 1.0 and not upgradeable. I bought the new modem because
Comcast tech told me the old one wouldn't handle the coming speed upgrade
to 6M (the modem manual also said its top speed is about 4M, and it was
handling that speed quite well using Mozilla and Firefox with eCS 1.15.
Tests at broadbandreports.com showed downloads of around 4000 K.) We
disconnected the 3Com, attached the Motorola, and called Comcast to
activate the new modem. After that was done, I went to broadbandreports,
and tested the speed using the same test site as with the 3Com. Download
speed was 2700-3000 K. Is there something I need to change in the new
modem settings or my router to get the current 4M speed, and the upcoming
6M with the SB5100? I thought it would just plug in and handle the
current speed, but maybe I was wrong?
Thanks for any help, as always.
Alan
