Re: Application Recommendations - Part 2

Several weeks ago, I posted a request for recommendations on various
applications. Note: I buy very little software and very few updates
because I'm short of cash. Thus, WordPerfect 6 Suite and Microsoft
Office (Word 6) will have to do. Updates would be a couple hundred $$.
I occasionally have problems converting documents created with newer
versions of Word but otherwise they suit my needs.

The response was overwhelming - about 2 dozen applications. Thank you.
I've been able to download or locate most of them but here are some
difficulties:

"DeScribe", "DeScribe Voyager 5 for OS/2". I can only find it on
Norloff's BBS, and can't get the hang of downloading it.

Both versions are readily available via P2P...

"Kiev Video" Is this what os2.kiev.ua/en calls "Warp Overlay?"

Kiev Video is the "Media Player" of OS/2. You'll need to purchase ($10?) the Warp Overlay product that goes with the Kiev Video. Kiev Video is still in beta but it is quite stable and works very well on so many media formats its amazing.

"z!" I can't find this anywhere. What is it? Who made it?

Made by Dink. It is free. Not a Gui but a damn good MP3 and Streaming Audio player. There is also PM123 which looks akin to other Win Audio players (Gui look) but z! is much better quality wise.

"Lotus Smartsuite ME 9.2" This is a commercial product but purchase of
it is confusing. If I do a Google search, I get many places that sell
it for about $32. I haven't heard of any of these places. If I go to
places I know, such as IBM or Mensys, the price jumps to about $281.
Is this the same product?

The product above works only under Windows and was made specifically for Windows. You want SS/2 v1.7.3

The latest release of SmartSuite for OS/2 plus the updates to
upgrade it to version 1.7.3.

SmartSuite and Warp 4.52 require no registration key or codes
to work. They simply install. eCS fanatics hate it when I report this
because they want you to believe the only way to get a 'legal'
copy of SS/2 is to buy eCS. Total bullpuckey. You can click
on the Warp 4.52 registration icon and the SS/2 registration icon
and register both. IBM has handed out thousands of copies of
Warp 4.52 and SS/2 at seminars, meetings, press junkets,
etc.

I'm presently reading the February 1995 issue of OS/2 Professional.
Its very interesting to see ads and discussions of these products.
This issue includes reviews of Clearlook and Mesa/2!

Mesa/2 is a fine spread*** application and many OS/2 users still use it. It too can be found easily on the Gnutella (P2P) network.

Again, thanks.

You are very welcome. Don't hesitate to come back and ask further questions.
