Re: BOOT CD hangs on screen01.sys

Hi all,
I just got a new pc to play with; it is the HP RP5700. I want to run
instyall OS/2 on the box, as my IBM PC325 is getting a bit old. The
5700 has a Core 2 Duo processor and 2GB ram slotting in DDR2 667Mhz
memory slots. There is a 80Gb SATA hard drive installed with a 16X DVD
+/-RW in the box as well.

When booting the machine with a standard WSeB CD's, and pressing Alt
+F2, the OS/2 load stops with that last message "loading
screen01.sys".

Where should I start to look? I have copied the OS2KRNL from XR_C005
in the CD, with no luck.

my vague recollection is that the c005 kernel has the final version of the
fixes I had to do for Opterons & P4s. However, there are a couple of other possibilities. One of them is this trap 0000 that happens due to a bogus timing loop in os2ldr. To see if that's it, try underclocking your system by running the FSB at 100mHz or whatever to drastically reduce the speed. If the system boots, that's the problem, and you're probably SOL (an os2ldr patch is possible, but I'm not set up to do that any more).

If that didn't help, you may actually be running in to a screen01 problem -- there was (again, I'm getting fuzzy about details) a problem with allocating enough memory to accomodate video cards with lots (i.e. > 32mb or 64mb) of onboard RAM. Try reducing the video aperture (in BIOS) to 64mb or less, or even trying a slow crappy video card to test out that theory.
