I don't know how to query the kernel, but it is the first eCS 1.1 german release. But with the 1.2 german boot CD, I have got the same problem while booting from CD.
Trevor,
Danis drivers are the eCS default drivers. I've updated now to the latest Danis506.add and daniatapi.flt, with no changes.
Can it be possible that the DVD drive has to be jumpered and Windows accepts the wrong jumpers, OS/2 not? On one wire, there's a CD burning drive and the DVD burning drive which makes the problem.

Yes, it is very possible that you have one drive jumpered cable select using the slave location and the other jumpered as slave. This or some other combination can cause problems with OS/2. My preference is to jumper them one as master and the other as slave.
Since most DVD are UDMA devices, you'll need an 80-wire cable. On some chip sets and main boards, you may need to specify the presence of the 80-wire cable, but that is not your main problem here (see Dani documentation).
If you not done so, check to see if the DVD has its latest firmware update. Use Windows if you must.
