Problem with burning CD-Rs

I am encountering problems burning CD-Rs after several years without
problems. I am using Chris Wohlgemuth's package to cover cdrecord. Here
is a snip from the last attempt to burn a CD-R that failed:

Error while writing the image!

Does this look like a hardware problem? Bad media? What does the RC
indicate? I have tried at speeds from 2-8x and encounter errors with all
of them. I have made 4 coasters attempting to burn this latest CD-R.
Would it make sense to try a CD-RW and see if I get the same errors?
Where do I go from here in tracking down and correcting this problem?
