running out of memory

I have 512 Meg of RAM, and don't run a l9arge number of apps, but my
system has been running out of memory, and requiring rebooting. I close
Firefox when I'm done with it, along with MR/2 ICE. The only thing
running during the night is the bbs software (Binkley/2, Maximus/2,
Internet Rex), which have never been resource hogs. What could be eating
my memory?
