Good to hear that. Sounds like you've scanned with grayscales in a
higher resolution. (You've already told that there are graphs
included.)
I've made good experiences with the following settings, but for text
only: lineart and 200x200 dpi (after many tests). That results in a
size of 470 kB per A4 page, uncompressed as TIF.
VTeX has compression built-in, so one can feed it with the
uncompressed bitmaps. It outputs the PDF with 50 kB per scanned A4
side. For printing, that's more than sufficient.
