The solution is to remove underscores from filenames then put images and
catalog in the root instead of a subdirectory.

Underscores are allowed if you enable the Joliet extensions.

The CD starts to boot but it seems that my content is incorrect as it
stops with the dreaded "unable to operate" message after danis506 has
reported.

There are a countably infinite number of reasons this could occur. How
did you build the images? Is this a command line boot or something more
complex? What type of boot load code are you using? Floppy emulation or
No emulation?

The ADD files appear to load but it is not clear that the second floppy
image, containing os2cdrom.dmd, has loaded.

This can only work if your boot loader supports this.

Another possible fault is that I forgot to shorten the name daniatapi.flt
to fit the 8.3 pattern. Right now I am out of CDs to toast.

I always recommend testing with RW CDs. :-)

BTW, do you have a specific reason for not using bootAble to help you
learn the ins and outs of this stuff?

Yes, I thought that the tools I am using were telling me the ins and outs of
this stuff, and because my reading suggests that every program that appears to
make the job easier comes with constraints.

The tools are Alex's web pages, DaniBoot.flt, virtual floppy, Savedskf, Mkisofs
ver2.0 and Create-Data-CD.

Using CDRW media and blanking it when the content proves faulty is a brilliant
idea.

So far the CDRW boots and (with altf2on present) I receive reports to screen
from Adaptec.add, Danis506.add and Daniatap.flt. the system stops before
os2cdrom.dmd reports.

All the files required to load the drivers are on the 2.88 image.
