Is there a code page for a Windows XP "Command Prompt" (CMD.EXE)
window that allows display of ISO 8859/1 characters?

*** I can't say because I don't use Windows anymore.

That aside, Code Page switching was developed for language support
for non English. If you were to implement certain codes, your keyboard
would display different characters for certain key presses. That is not
what you want. I assume you want to just be able to see the characters as
they were intended.

Yes, that's what I want, but Code Page switching is not just for
keyboard (input), but also for display (output). I.e. for some character
codes above 127 decimal (7F HEX), the displayed character will differ,
depending on the setting of the Code Page. For details, see the Code
Page references which I gave.

*** I understand that. I wanted to point out though, that if you
implement code switching, that the keyboard would be affected in an
undesirable way with most codes.

I use my newsreader, tin, in such a window.

*** Hmm, perhaps TIN is the problem. It is a UNIX program and maybe
there is a conflict running it under XP. If Windows programs are
displaying correctly, I can't see how making a country code change will
help.

No, it's a 'DOS-box' ("Command Prompt" window) thing, because, as I
explained, doing a "copy con junk", entering Alt+169 and then "more
junk", reproduces the problem (i.e. without tin).

*** Hmm, so presumably Windows does not pass this capability on to DOS.

(I am using TIN right now to type this post.)

Yes, I know, and a very old one at that. If you can, I advise to
update. The 1.4.X and beyond (now 1.8.X) versions are much, much better.

*** I am unable to do that. I use a shell server for news, mail
and most Internet; Chebucto provides only this version. They tried
updating to a newer one but it presented some sort of problem
(security ?), so they kept with the version you see now.

Believe me, I was quite happy with 1.2 (PL2) *until* I got 1.4.0. *Then*
I realized what I had been missing all that time. If you have any
questions or need help, news.software.readers is over there ----->

*** Thanks.

Anyway, thanks for your response.

*** You're welcome, I thought that since no one responded, I would
even though I didn't have an answer for you.

I'll probably not worry too much
about it. As I said, most articles with local language characters
display fine. When there's one which doesn't and the right character(s)
can not be deduced from the context,

*** OK.

I can always save ('s') the article
to a file and then do "notepad article.txt" to see the special
character(s). After all, I have to use that Windows stuff for
*something*, don't I? :-)

*** In my opinion, no. (-:
