This is release 1 of the binaries and libraries of the port of GNU binutils to MSDOS/DJGPP.
- Only the beta binary and library packages have been updated. Both products
have been configured and compiled from scratch and out-of-the-box using
bnu217s.zip provided by Gordon Schumacher some time ago.
I guess you didn't see (or weren't interested) that I recompiled it
myself. Oh well, it doesn't take *that* long to recompile it, I
guess. ;-)
- The binaries have been stripped but *not* compressed with upx. As usual,
the libraries have not been stripped at all.
Using UPX 3.02 "--best" seems to (still) work fine in pure DOS (with
my build, at least).
This release has been produced using stock djdev204.zip, bnu217b.zip and
gcc423b.zip, as can be downloaded from any ftp.delorie.com mirror,
on a WinXP system. Please note that I have no longer access to a system
with short file names, so I cannot test if it works without LFN support.
"works without LFN"? You mean recompiling or using? I was able to
build NASM and TDEP with my build yesterday of BinUtils 2.17, and I
didn't need any LFNs.
No SFN system? How about "set LFN=n" or trying a FreeDOS bootdisk?

The DJGPP 2.04 binaries can be downloaded from ftp.delorie.com and mirrors as
(timestamp 2008-03-28):
binutils 2.17 binaries linker scripts, info and man format documentation:
ftp://ftp.delorie.com/pub/djgpp/beta/v2gnu/bnu217br1.zip
Not to nitpick, but nobody ever took my suggestion to use
AdvanceComp's ADVZIP tool. It uses 7-Zip's improved Deflate to make
smaller .ZIPs than normal (automatically recompresses in memory), and
it is still compatible with all unzippers. The only caveat (trivial,
IMO) is that it strips extra field info and comments. But since I
don't think you use those, it's moot.
4,740,125 -> 4,601,172 bytes (saves 136k)
You could also just use 7-Zip: "7za a -mx9 bnu217br1.zip bnudir/"
binutils 2.17 header, libraries, info and man format documentation:
ftp://ftp.delorie.com/pub/djgpp/beta/v2gnu/bnu217ar1.zip
1,993,706 -> 1,931,735 bytes (saves 60k)
Enjoy.

Thanks again for all your efforts! :-)
