I am not going to use such monsters like python or perl on such a
small system. I am only considering to use it to monitor other
machines on a LAN using telnet and lynx and probably other old commands
such as rsh, finger, talk and rwho. It has a very small footprint and
does not have a CD unit. Giovanni wrote he could set it up on a CD
less 486: how did you do it? Do you have any on-line guide as to how
you did this?

I wrote that it was hard and unfortunately I'm not able to reproduce it in a quick mode.

I built a boot floppy and a root floppy. Boot floppy has to be loader as RAM disk and root floppy mounted as /usr. The latter has a minimum of programs to install on hard disk and to prepare the directory tree.

Then rebooting from hard disk I started to transfer via floppy the network tools so that the network could be made operational.

Once you get to this point it is possible to use the network and a full installation can be carried to completion.

I had to build the initial floppies manually selecting the programs and resizing them to the bare minimum. Also the kernel/servers image has to be rebuilt (image_small may be OK although I resized some of the servers) to fit in small amount of RAM.

To worsen the whole process my 486 box has SCSI only controller so I had also to port the aha1540 driver from 2.0.4 and use it to boot with no chance to test it before. For this reason and for my laziness now I do not have any more the original floppies :-(

Sooner or later I'll try to rework the procedure but for now I'm stuck with the installation I have.

Ciao
Giovanni
