2) How do I change the network connection?
Again searching though google suggested that editing /sys/devices/if_3c509_info.c could be the solution, but this was for a version 2.x and patches were avaliable to make it autosensing. In if_3c509_info.c, on our machine, the line '0,/* TP=0, AUI=1, BNC=3 */' appears to suggest it is already set to twisted pair? Could you also tell me the process of recompiling.
The driver is probably already compiled into your kernel and it is just a matter of starting the right one
I forgot to look up the correct location for the startup script, but I think that it is rc.network in the /net (or etc) folder
This has several lines of the form 'startit nicType'. All but one is commented out and it is a matter of finding the right driver and removing the # from the start of the line
The lynxOs 3c509 driver is quite particular about which boards that it drives (not all 3c509's are equal !!) If it complains about the adapter not being found, then it probably doesn't support your card - you need to check the device code returned by the bios for it
