Just about any Promise card works fine... Its not only faster than the
standard Alpha IDE, but supports UDMA w/sync burst as well. I get upwards of
25MBs transfer rates with mine [Kernel-2.6.13.4].
You should be able to do like I did...
Compile your kernel with Promise Card support
Place your kernel on the boot drive partitioned /boot
Have your UDMA drive, one on the Promise card, mounted as /
It will work like a top. I used a el'cheapo 50MB boot drive and 2 36GB
drives are my main drives

Hi,
I've just put a 250Go disk (Western Digital WD2500JB) on IDE port 0 of
an XP900 workstation. But I can't have it to work with DMA on. The
way to access the disk (fdisk /dev/hda) is PIO mode ! I'm not very
interested with high transfert rate but I need the lesser cpu usage.
The XP900's IDE chip is ALi 1543 (rev c1). The driver for this chip
(in kernel 2.6.11.4) tell it can support udma2 on the first 137Go of
the drive, then PIO mode.
Also there is a Compaq cd-rom on port ide1.
Do you have any clue ? Thanks.
Get a PCI IDE controller. They're cheap, and several times faster
than that onboard thing.
