I can't comment on John's site, but so many oters on the wab are so
badly designed, that in self defence I use features *all* browsers
offer since time immemorial.

In Firefox it is
Tools -> Options -> Content -> Colors -> Allow pages to choose ...: off
Advaced -> minimum font size: on
choose fonts: off

In Internet Exporer it is:
Tools -> Options -> Accessibility -> All three ignores: on

In Opera it is more complicated and would involve writing a style sheet
though this one offers disabling of all CSS at one click. So I use
Opera as my refernce for looking at sites the way authors intended me
to and with scripting and Firefox with scripting off for all normal
useage.

So while I agree that John's site is a terrible strain on the eyes (my
own subjective judgement), I'd never even notice in normal use. On the
downside all highlighting done by colour only is lost, on the plus side
all links are clearly highlighted.
