relay to smarthost without changing DNS

Hi all,
I have googled and cannot find anything that quite fits the bill.
I have mail for a domain routed to two of our mail relay servers as
primary and secondary MX.
These servers are also authoratative for the domain in question via
BIND.
However, I want to relay the mail to one of two different outside IP
address, neither of which are listed in the MX table.
I can't use split DNS and I can't see that Andrzej Filip Smart Table
functionality really fits the bill.
I would like to deliver mail to these two IP's in the precise way that
DNS MX works so that if one or other remote IP is down, the mail will
be delivered to the fallback.
I am beginning to think it cannot be done with finding some way to
configure split DNS on the sendmail servers which will play havoc with
sendmail I have no doubt.
Does anyone have any ideas that may help please?
Thanks all,
jON
.
