Broken pipes and single quotes

Hi all,
I (or at least someone) have got a strange problem:
Once in a while my ever smooth running mail relay (sending to and from our
internal Exchange server) starts creating a queue and refuses more or less to
relay the email to the Exchange server. The emails are deferred, and the log
files show broken pipes.
Someone suggested the Exchange server might be the perp, but I found a
specific email (from a specific person) to be the bad guy (gal).
That email shows a large number of recipients on the To: header (approx. 30),
and the thingy that refuses this message to be relayed are the single quotes
in thos email addresses:
To: someone@xxxxxxxxxxxxx <'someone@xxxxxxxxxxxxx'>,
someonediff@xxxxxxxxxxxxx <'someonediff@... (you get the picture).
Whenever I change all the quotes to nothing in the qf-file, the messages
relays, and so do all other messages in the queue.
I could ask the sender to do something about this, however according to our
secretary she's a b*tch, so this is not an option.
Is there some way I can sanitize these kind of headers?
My mail setup:
Sendmail 8.14.3
Mimedefang (with spamassassin and clamav)
milter-greylist
all on FreeBSD 6.4
TIA
Peter
