Group;
I am new to sendmail.
I have an office of 3 users that has a new copier. They want to scan and
have these scans sent to their email addresses. The copier company says
they need an on-site mail server. I want to use CentOS 4.4 server and do
DHCP, DNS, and use sendmail to forward this internal output from the copier.
Has anyone done this?
So do you send e-mail to company personnel today? What do you use as
the e-mail server? Why can't you just use that?
Really, the scanner is just acting like another e-mail client in your
office.
How do I configure sendmail to do this?
By default, sendmail will accept and delivery e-mail - as that is what
it is designed to do. However, in most distributions (such as the one
that comes with CentOS) it is configured to listen and accept connection
from the local machine only. You'll have to change the sendmail.mc to
allow connections from other hosts within your network.
However, if your network is not behind a firewall, you really don't want
to be setting up sendmail to accept connections from the network unless
you really know what you're doing - there are those that will use your
sendmail server to relay spam.
I will look at the sendmail HOW-TO; I'm more interested in if this can be
done and if anyone has done it. We would not be following the copier
company's "advice" because they want us to put in an email server like
Exchange. All email is pop3. I have a similar setup at my main office of
20 users and we use Windows 2003 server for that *without* Exchange or any
other email service working. The copier just relies on DNS from the W23K
server. I think it should work for the 3 man office.
Any comments welcome.
Thanks
Doug
