For years, this worked fine. Yesterday I received an error message: "You are not authorized to send as <old email address>"
No surprise here. It sounds like your "New ISP" is trying to fight spam leaving their network. This in and of its self is a good thing, though it does have some draw backs as you have seen.
I called up the NEW ISP, and, sure enough, they have changed the server settings, and I should use the SMTP of my OLD ISP anyway,
thank you, good day.
Do they not have a way to exempt you from the apparently new configuration? You may have to go up past one or two levels of technical support.
That I tried, and so I learned about another wonderful error message from the world of SMTP: "You do not have a trusted IP address (or
something like this) - relaying denied".
This is as expected. Most ISPs will not let people out side of their network relay through their SMTP servers, or at least not with out authentication.
I called up the OLD ISP, and they said, why, sure, you need to be
part of our network, otherwise we deny relaying, thank you, good day.
*nod* Call them back and ask if they support Authenticated SMTP (or POP Auth) to send through their servers from any where in the world. This is what you really need to do.
I then tried to use the SMTP servers of my free mail accounts. With Yahoo, I had a moment of hope, when the server responded "email address not verified" and a link to a help page. I entered my old
email into the "alternate email address" of my Yahoo profile, and
verified it. My account now says it's verified, but the SMTP server
still says it isn't
I would not expect this to work, or for very much longer if it even did work.
You also have other issues working against you if you do not use the "Old ISP"'s mail server, namely SPF / Domain Keys and the likes. If your "Old ISP" starts saying where email will come from that uses their domain and you come from out side of that, you will quite likely be considered bogus / forged spam at best and or rejected at worst.
After getting this far, I decided to tap the collective wisdom of
"the 'groups". So here I am. Pretty please: Any hints what I could
try? I really like my old email addresses, they're so short and
memorable.
As your self and others have stated, this is not the correct place to ask this question. But seeing as how I just had some caffeine and I'm in a good mood, so be it. ;)
Grant. . . .
P.S. If you are unable to find a place to do Auth SMTP like you need to, contact me off list with a subject including "Auth SMTP Request" (or something like that) as my company can help you.
