I would say that using a CNAME as an MX record is more frowned upon than
illegal as this is a commonly accepted practice.
Not rare perhaps, but accepted only by people on the heavy side of
Sturgeon's Law.
RFC's are not lawa, but they do define ways to be interoperable. I
