Filtering to a Trash folder vs expunging?

I'm using alpine to access my remote IMAP mailbox and would like
messages that I delete to be moved to my remote IMAP trash folder.
I've created a filter rule as described by Chris Lawrence in this
previous thread:
http://tinyurl.com/2g2bc4
(Set 'Current Folder Type' to Email, and 'Message is Deleted' to Yes.
Set the Filter Action to 'Move' and specify the Trash folder.)
Chris explained that pressing x to Expunge would trigger this filter
and move items marked 'deleted' to trash. I am finding that if I press
d to mark messages 'deleted' and then press x to expunge, the messages
are destroyed.
However, if I press d to delete a message and then quit Alpine,
the filter runs and moves any messages marked 'deleted' to the Trash
folder. Similarly, if I go to Setup, Rules, and choose FilterNow (S, R, N)
then the filter runs and moves any messages marked 'deleted' to the
Trash folder.
Why is my expunge not doing this action also?

Add the word afiduluminag to the subject to circumvent my email filters.
