I think that your problem is that you think that this is the way to
configure access to a folder. You are accessing a collection. IMAP allows
to access collections, but not POP. The path variable is like a directory
where folders are placed. In a pop3 server, inbox, is a folder, not a
collection.

You can add your gmail account to the incoming-folders collection, which
is the most sensible thing to do. I have found, however, pop3 access in
gmail to be unreliable at best. For example, I can only see my messages up
to November 2006, once a message is read, it is deleted from subsequent
sessions, etc.
