I just like to cover all my bases. If I happen to be using a machine that
isn't mine I can access my mail via a webmail interface or ssh into my
remote account and run pine. I wouldn't want to copy the files locally.

But when I am on my own machine or laptop, it's more pleasant to have my
own local mail client setup, so I run pine locally and connect to a remote
IMAP account, and I'd like to copy the emails onto the machine so I know I
can always read them offline in case of any kind of outage, or when on a
bus etc. Notice copy - I don't want to remove them from the remote machine
in case I need them there when I'm not on my own machine.

In this way my emails are safe. Should my hard drive crash and I don't
have it backed up my emails are still on the remote server, should the
remote server go down for some reason I still have my mails on my machine
and can upload them to a new account.

So basically I'd like to do what was suggested - create a set of local
mailboxes and copy all the emails over without deleting the source copies.
I guess ultimately Pine isn't designed for this and doesn't
support it explicitly. You can `synchronise' the folders for
offline use in Mozilla Thunderbird or Ximian Evolution and switch between
online and offline modes. Those are the only two mail clients I've found
that actually meet my needs, and unfortunately I just don't like them very
much, they're buggy and annoying, Pine is much more pleasant.
