Thanks for your reply!
I'm in a dilemma: I don't know how to take this forward, now.
I insist that my original observations were - and still are - correct,
and were being observed in all the situations that I tried.
1. If I go from (say) alt.a to alt.b and back to alt.a then my filters
/are/ run, and I see only the fresh articles that have passed
filtering. This is the desired behaviour.
2. Whereas, if I try to re-open alt.a directly, the filters are not
run, I see also lots of fresh articles which ought to have been
filtered out, and PINE behaves as if it does not consider these
articles to be recent/new. This behaviour seems undesirable.
But now, we've got bogged down in a discussion of New status, and
I have to report as follows.
As I already said, I have access to two news servers, and during these
tests I've generally been posting here via one of them, using unix
Pine 4.62, and making my tests via the other one, using PC-Pine 4.63,
and with completely independent configurations.
Now and again I've been checking the tests, however, on the first
setup.
I have to confess I had got the unix version set up with
news-approximates-new-status enabled, and had forgotten about it. I
guess this explains the "New" flags there. Indeed, I have confirmed
that all the articles which are fresher than the last deleted article
is marked "N".
However, the PC-Pine version is more of a mystery, since I've reported
honestly that I was seeing "N" flags there too, despite the fact that
on looking at the configuration, the news-approximates-new-status
option was *not* enabled. *However*, subsequently I have tried
turning it on (that seemed to make no difference), and then off again:
and *now* the "N" flags have disappeared. Which seems to be what you
expect.
I think I have to conclude, thanks to what Mark said and the other
discussions, that the "N" flag has been a pointless distraction in
investigating the original issue, and also that trying to adjust the
filter condition from "is Recent" (as I had been using) to "is New"
(which was one of the things that I tried in the tests) has brought no
new insights.
As for the original problem, I *do* clearly have a workaround (i.e to
visit some other group in between), so it's not an earth-stopping
problem; but the current behaviour on directly re-opening the group
doesn't seem useful to me, so if there's any chance of making it
behave as expected/hoped, then that would be good.
all the best.
