You must be running mutt in screen. I've never seen color support in a

"TERM=xterm mutt" works fine and gives colours in Konsole.

We're talking about osx not linux. None of the terminal emulators I've
tried in osx -- Terminal, iTerm, xterm, rxvt -- will show colors with
TERM=xterm, either in the Aqua window system or the X11 window system.

I've never tried any KDE components in osx and I do my best to avoid
them when I run linux. I _really_ don't like KDE...

Color isn't the issue anyway; it works fine with TERM set to xterm-color
or rxvt or nsterm, or in screen. The issue is the handling of key
strokes. With TERM set to rxvt or xterm or xterm-color, function keys
don't work, at least not in mutt; with TERM set to nsterm, function
keys work, but some standard vim key bindings I depend on don't.
Everything works in screen, but at least from time to time I run mutt
directly. Since I use vim a lot more often than I use function keys,
I'm staying with xterm-color for now. Still, learning about nsterm was
definitely worthwhile.

As for F1-F4 being the only supported function keys in osx, I'm not sure
where that notion comes from. I use F5 and F6 routinely in emacs, and
I'm reasonably certain I could use all the rest of the F keys if I
wanted to. It's true that F9-F12 are bound by default to Exposé and
Dashboard. But that can easily be disabled.
