The RFC's say that if a message does not specify a Content-Type header
that it should be treated as Content-type: text/plain; charset=us-
ascii? However, is this still widely in practice? The reason why I
ask is that we have a CRM system that does mail parsing and it when we
get messages from our spanish customers with accents it corrupts the
message (only when the messages do not properly set the content-
type). Which makes sense since the accents are above the us-ascii
charset.
Such messages usually come from Outlook Express with default settings.
Ask your customers to configure this would-be e-mail program correctly:
Tools > Options > Send
Mail Sending Format > Plain Text Settings > Message format MIME
News Sending Format > Plain Text Settings > Message format MIME
Encode text using: None
or, still better, to drop Outlook Express altogether.
