Taken together with comments above on scandir and malloc function seen
in the stack trace, makes me suspect a bug in the courier-imap
regarding handling a really huge mailboxes.

There are no known bugs in Courier-IMAP with large mailboxes. Of course, you must've confirmed that the ulimit setting in your imapd configuration file is sufficient enough to handle your mailboxes.
