Re: Problems with Dovecot and Thunderbird over openVPN

HI.

Check for MTU related issues, here is a good explanasion:

Have you considered using IMAPS (imap ssl connection on port 993) instead of Open VPN?

I've now got a Dovecot (0.99.14-1) server running on Debian. From within the office, IMAP connections using various clients (Outlook, Outlook Express, and Thunderbird 1.5 on windows) are all running fine. My home PC (w2k) is connected to the office using OpenVPN, running from another linux box to the Dovecot Debian server. The OpenVPN tunnel is working fine for general network access.

When using Outlook Express 5, I have reliable IMAP access to the Dovecot server. Obviously it's a bit slow for big emails, since the connection is over OpenVPN and an ADSL line, but it all works fine. However, Thunderbird 1.5 behaves very badly on the same machine - I get repeated timeout errors (within a couple of seconds of starting Thunderbird!), and I often get "... is not an IMAP4 server" errors.

As well as timeout errors when simply looking at different folders or emails, I am getting timeouts while downloading attachments (again, it works fine from OE5). To make matters worse, if Thunderbird has downloaded 20% of an attachment, and stopped with a timeout, I can find no way to get it to download the rest or retry the download (other than restarting Thunderbird).

Any ideas or hints would be much appreciated - I would far rather get Thunderbird working properly than use OE.
