login in uw imap on Mac Os

Hello all,

I compiled and installed the uw imap server on my iBook (Mac Os 10.4.3)
following instructions.

There's no way to log in. The instruction say to connect with telnet
and try to use the usual account on my machine, like this:

.. login myUser myPasswd

and the answer is

.. NO LOGIN failed

In the FAQs and troubleshooting
(http://www.washington.edu/imap/IMAP-FAQs/index.html question 7.4)
I found that a possible reason can be that the "client" doesn't send
the password with a "*" in it.

I can find nothing about * in the IMAP protocol specs.

The log says what follows:

ibook-di-ciccio-cauro:~ cato$ tail /var/log/imap.log
Jan 2 13:47:33 ibook-di-ciccio-cauro imapd[229]: imap service init

ibook-di-ciccio-cauro:~ cato$

What does "Command stream end of file" means ? Which end of file ?

I also tried with Mail (the Apple mail client) and it can't login too.

Please help me.

The reason why I want to install an IMAP server on my iBook is that I
use to boot linux too; My idea was to install an IMAP server on Mac Os
and another one on Linux and configuring them to serve the same
mailboxes files !

So I could have the same mailbase in both the enviroinments !

It's never as easy as it looks like...

Thanks so much for any help
Bye
Catonano
