do you think will be lacking in Penelope?
Well lets start with a few quick things about Thunderbird:
It's not a Mac program and forces Mac users into doing things the way
Windows/The X Window System does things. (Or in some instances, in a way
nothing else does them...)
It does not have the elegance of function that Eudora has, eg, Eudora has a
Recipient list for frequent recipients, which is a subset of the address
book.
Further, it has multiple ways to insert addresses from the recipient list,
into any part of the message at all.
It does not have the flexibility of Eudora in so many ways, eg, Option
clicking on a field in a mailbox view to bring all identical entries
together.
It's slow.
I cannot easily change the font in the mailbox window (as far as I can see)
When you make a column narrower in the mailbox view, it widens the next
column
rather than keeping it the same size and moving it to the left. When you
widen
a column, the next column gets narrower.
It relies on multi-pane windows. Without them things are not accessible. Eg,
you cannot see what mailboxes and folders you have in a separate window or in
a menu - you seem to have to use the two-pane interface for a mailbox window.
I want an e-mail program that does e-mail superbly. I don't want one that
does
other things that detract from its mail function (eg, newsreading - there are
already dozens of perfectly functional newsreaders)
Cannot have "Any header" in the filters - I use that one almost exclusively.
Cannot create a new folder from the filter definition dialogue.
Yes, I know I have not mentioned the things that Thunderbird is good at, but
most of them Eudora also does, or I don't use them. On the other hand, there
are literally dozens of things Eudora does *that I use regularly* that
Thunderbird doesn't.
Putting plugins into Thunderbird may resolve some of these, but won't deal
with the major ones.
I'm not sure I follow. With the exception of "it's slow" (which is
certainly a problem), all of the above sound like things that can easily
be addressed by Penelope extensions. Some of them are already in the
works (e.g., multi-pane, option-click); whatever isn't should be added
as a bug:

Call me crazy, but my thinking is that we should give Penelope a little
time, and participate as much as we can (especially at these early
stages) by telling the developers what we want through the bugzilla
reporting system. (Or, if you have the time and the abilities, become a
developer!)
