Exactly my thoughts. I've tried Thunderbird in the past, but, no, thanks.
Why would the owners of Eudora let it go open source? Eudora is a viable product for Windows, and presumably they have more sales for that version than for the Mac version. If they let the Mac version go open source, what's to stop someone from porting it to Windows?
