How does address autocomplete work in 5.2?

I have sponsored 5.2 for the Mac.
How does the address autocomplete work? Yes, I know it works when I
start to type something from my address book. But it also seems to try
to work when I'm typing a nickname NOT in the address book but that
happens to be in my in or outbox. (By nickname, I mean that, for
example joebob <mynameisjoebob@xxxxxxxxxx> would have joebob for the
nickname).
BUT... there are plenty of other addresses that exist very frequently in
my inbox or outbox, and I'll start to type either the nickname, or the
email address, and no autocomplete happens.
So exactly what are the logical rules applied by Eudora for the
Macintosh, that determine when the autocomplete kicks in?
.
