Most companies care, whether they should or not. All the recent Ruby
want-ads here have stated location and either said they were looking for
locals, or were willing to relocate them. Only 1 of them suggested they
might be able to work from a distance, and even they said that they were
looking for someone in their area so that occasional face-to-face
gatherings would be easier.

And I'm going to be honest... I work best in an office environment. At
least, so far. That may change over time, but since it's always been
true, I doubt it.

Of all the areas of human endeavor that could divest themselves of this
silly notion of "locality", one would think that sofware development
would be among the first.

I hear you there. I can only think of 1 job less restricted to
location, and that's 'medical transcriptionist.' Heh.
