And an IDE doesn't have a learning curve? It doesn't take all that much
to learn Emacs or VI, just spending time with them -- and the time you
spend will pay dividends beyond programming as well, think writing text,
xml, html, etc.

No one should expect to reach the higher bounds of efficiency with the
basics of any editor or IDE. Those who are willing to take the time to
master vi or emacs are certainly capable of being scary fast/efficient
programmers.
So, less hyperbole and opinion, and more ruby hacking please.
