What happens during this printing process ? Is the PDF converted
into a PS file, which is sent to the printer ?
Yes, if you're using the PS driver for the printer.
A PDF can contain layers, variable transparency, gradients and
whatelse.
So?
Conversion into PS requires flattening, which should be done in
the printer, not on the host.
"Should" is the keyword there.
Does your printer speak PDF? If not (but it speaks Postscript), then
what else can/should you do?
My actual PDFs are rather simple, it worked since many years
perfectly.
Chinese is also a very simple language, and it has worked for millennia.
But if you don't speak Chinese, should I talk to you in Chinese? Does
that make sense?
The offending feature is the switching between Lab and
CMYK. This seems to cause confusion, and I hoped to solve the
problem by re-arranging sequences in the EPS files - so far no
success.
Who is doing that conversion? Your PDF reader? Find out and fix the
root cause.
The conversion should be:
PDF-reader PS printer driver
PDF ------------> Windows GDI calls -----------------> PS
I'm unfamiliar with Windows and hence can't say if GDI can support CYMK
and Lab perfectly.
You could also try other PDF->PS converters. There are many free ones:
foxit, xpdf, ghostscript, ... Some of these (e.g. xpdf, ghostscript)
doesn't go through the Window GDI calls, and hence could avoid problems
caused by it.
Would it be recommended to choose generally the Archive Format ?
Ja. Die (veraltete?) englische Version sagt tatsächlich: "Optimize for
portability" mit der Erklärung "better interoperability with other
software" oder etwas Ähnliches, soweit ich mich daran erinnere kann.
From my experience, the Adobe readers and Acrobat generate their ownPostScript when printing to a PostScript printer and use the PS printer
driver's "pass through" feature. But this feature interferes weirdly with
the printer driver's "optimization" strategy if the "optimize for speed"
feature is selected.
