Some TTF or OTF come with an extra GSUB for glyph substitution, but I'm
not sure if there are any (free) fonts that überhaupt make use of it.

Perhaps a new variant of TeX called XeTeX (with direct TTF support) might
take advantage of this feature, but that's probably something for a
distant future.

Postscript, but to dvips.

Indeed it is; and apparently, "faxlo" and "faxhigh" are only conceived to
work with bitmap fonts, not with Type1 fonts.

Thanks for your info, and sorry for bothering this list. I've sent the
first mail to comp.text.tex as well, and there I got the solution to my
question.
