The output of pstops is fed to psnup. For psnup to "correctly" position
input sheets on the output sheet, some of the input sheets need to be
shifted "outside" of the "natural boundary".

With all due respect, why not use pstops to perform the "nup" operation
to your taste. You have a lot more control over what happens.

With all due respect: since pstops is not smart enough. This would
mean I need to duplicate all the code in psnup.

pstops always crop. And about what is "reasonable", I think I'm
better qualified to know what I need from pstops. 1/2 ;-)

Again, with all due respect, why are you asking for help if you already
know everything?
