In article <byram-1207071252460001@xxxxxxxx>, byram@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
says...
Of course, the first line should read lpi not dpi:
:-) I figured that, I guessed it was just a typo..
% a series of halftone boxes at 60, 75, 85, 106, 120 lpi
This is extracted from the PS file when the PDF is exported from Acrobat 4.0
There are no references to setscreen
Not a problem, sethalftone supercedded setscreen, it does the same job
but offers more flexibility, and can include transfer functions.

Basically this code creates a function called initialize which resets
some graphics state to the initial (or default) values.
It seems to use some utility functiosn not defined here to determine
whether or not to call an operator 'sethalftonephase', which is device-
specific, and also to call sethalftone, though it looks like part of the
function definition is missing here.

Acrobat 6 will only enable 85 lpi 600 x 600 dpi from the SaveAs PostScript
option with the 1200 dpi printer selected and "Allow PostScript file to
override PDF settings" checked in the advanced settings.
However, the PDF conversion and exported PS will print at 106 lpi if 1200
dpi is chosen from the printer menu but the individual boxes remain
identical.
Sounds to me like the problem is Acrobat not honouring the halftone
because your printer isn't high enough resolution to handle the screen.
I'll have a play with your original PostScript job this afternoon, but
it'll be a bit slow. I'm testing very large output which means I'm
rendering pages at > 50,000 dpi, which rather slows down my PC :-(
I'll get back when I've had a chance to look.
