However GSView also tells you it is not a DSC file. So it

Technical stuff a mere user shouldn't be expected to know
who is just trying to view a file.
It does matter. A mere user should know when certain things are expected
not to work. Things like being able to open a ProEngineer CAD file with
MS Word.
A mere user may not know why things don't work, but he is entitled to be
given a clear message saying that things have failed / will fail.
Here the message is :
From what I can tell, the file you are trying to view cannot be renderedby a PS viewer because it is not properly formed PS.
Illustrator CS2 does not allow to save as AI 4/5/6/7
formats so I cannot tell you what they look like.
Possibly, you are in one of those cases.
OK. So, where's a free viewer that can cope with these
Illustrator pseudo-EPS files?
There is no such thing, I am afraid.
You need to produce a properly formed interchange format upfront (true
PS or EPS or whatever else) to view it outside Adobe applications.
Otherwise, you have to use the application that produced said file for
viewing it.
If you can figure out the missing prolog, chances are you can prepend it
and view it as a valid PS file (with say GS). But I agree again: Such a
hack is beyond the skills one would arguably expect from a mere user.
