And it blithers on.
I am supposed to see a typeset page or an image, not this. What do I
need to change? Why doesn't it work "out of the box"? Or am I supposed
to use something else to view .eps files (if so, what? They didn't
associate with Acrobat Reader when I installed that, but they did
associate with GSView...)
Try opening the example PostScript files that come with Ghostscript.
They're in the "Examples" folder. See if you can view all of them OK.
If so, then Ghostscript is working OK, and the file you'd like to view
isn't a valid eps file.
