Googling hasn't turned up anything non-technical BTW -- all of it seems
targeted at document authors or developers, not mere users trying
simply to *view* a file they didn't create themselves.
I did stumble on a reference to using Corel apps to access eps files,
and sure enough my copy of Corel Draw claims to support eps.
Unfortunately, it doesn't actually, in a rather roundabout fashion. It
shows a postscript file filter (PS, PRN, EPS); when I go to open the
eps file this way however it says "This file is in Adobe Illustrator
format, version 9 or higher. Please use the PDF import filter to import
the file."
The icing on the cake is that when I drop down the File menu, there is
an "Import..." option ... and it's greyed for no obvious reason.
So much for viewing it in Corel Draw. Time to see if Acrobat Reader can
make sense of it, given that Corel is claiming it's a close relative of
PDF files and despite the fact that installing Adobe's large chunk of
crap didn't associate eps files with it (or anything else).
