Re: PLI support no longer available?

Hopefully, this reply will be clear (and accurately reflects what I know/hear
from IBM).

1) It is ENTIRELY true that support for any "stand-alone" PL/I compiler for the
Windows platform is going (or has gone) away. (Just as earlier support for the
OS/2 product went away - and I don't know if they ever provided a 16-bit DOS
product).

2) IBM *fully* supports (and continues to enhance) the PL/I compiler (and
run-time) portions of the WDz (Websphere Developer for zSeries) product. This
PL/I component provides support for and is valid for:
- compiles on Windows for applications targeted for Windows
- compiles on Windows for applications targeted for z/OS
- "cross-system" testing, file-access, etc
*ALL* of the above, in combination, separately, or however any customer wants to
use it

3) As far as I know there is not now, nor has there ever been an "Enterprise
COBOL" for the Windows platform. HOWEVER, as the LRM is "shared" across the
platforms (AIX, z/OS, *and* Windows) the "language" is the same for all the
currently supported (and continued to be supported) PL/I compilers.

4) I believe (but haven't checked actual dates) both the VisualAge PL/I compiler
for Windows *and* the VisualAge PL/I compiler for "OS/390 & z/OS" are now
out-of-service or have drop dates. The status of the VA PL/I product has
absolutely, positively NOTHING to do with the support status of either
Enterprise PL/I for z/OS *or* the PL/I for Windows component of the WDz product.

***

Any and all "rumors" of lessened support by IBM for PL/I are simply FALSE. It
is true that IBM is spending its support resources on the CURRENT version of its
products (on each platform) - but that is not a lessening of commitment to the
language on all platforms where such products ARE still supported.

At the risk of being bombed by F.F. ....

As an aside to the previous threads on whether the recent announcement by
IBM that WebSphere was "taking over" from Ent/VA PLI.

We've just come to renewing our IBM support licenses DB2/UDB and PLI on
Windows for the next year. A couple of weeks ago both were listed in the
reminder they sent - PLI alone coming to over Eur700. In a reminder
received today, PLI has been removed from the list, and when it was checked
we were told it was no longer available (I don't know the details, as I'm
only passing on what I was told).
So it seems that IBM is pulling support, at least for certain customers.
