And that is what killed Java, the fact that it got thrown out of MS
platforms.
My sentiments exactly. Java should've accepted MS's changes, even if
flawed. MS put Java onto millions of desktops. It's hard for me comprehend
that Sun didn't grasp that continued support from MS was necessary for the
future success of Java...
Note that I didn't necessarily assign blame to either MS or Sun. Neither of
them are wonders of straight reasoning for the common good.
The conclusion is just that if it is not universal and homogenous anymore
(multiple versions or multiple runtimes), and users have to download it, the
basic premise goes away.
Same with .NET where the portability aspect is not even a stopgap.
Nowadays if you download an arbitrary <n> applications you have as much
runtimes to install, either packaged or not. And all they make the same
argument "yes but that is only the first time". The second time never comes,
and the avg program uses only a very small subset of the runtime, so it
requires more than a handful of downloads to earn it back.
I've two .NET apps on my machine, one .NET 1.1 and one .NET 2.0. THe first
one only uses .NET in one module (Delphi 2005 has a j# syntax
highlighter+codetools), the 2.0 one is a very minimal app that queries
OpenGL capabilities.
