If you're interrested in photos of snow flakes look up "Snowflake
Bently,"
Bently was a Vermont farmer who photographed thousands of
snow flakes in the 1800s.

Back in the early camera days.
There is a museum of his work in Essex, Vermont.

In his thousands of pictures there are no two snowflakes alike.
All are six identical point stars.

Which makes me wonder. how does one branch of a snow flake
know what is being added on to another branch?

Which make me wonder ... how `can' or `do' we know-qua-KNOW whatever we delude ourselves that we `know'. There was this old dude named Sophocles who wrote a story about a king who knew yet didn't know -- who could discern by didn't discern -- his wife from his mother, his father from his enemy, etc. I suspect each snowflake doesn't `know any better' than the rest of us `flakes'. 8-]

Does this negate the Einsteinian tenet that no message can travel
faster than the speed of light ?

If you're considering this from a branch-by-branch (each snowflake having 6 branches) I suppose it might. For if hex radial symmetry is to be manifest in the snowflake mere happenstance and randomness would't result in such symetry ... it seems. But what if the features of a slow flake evolved as progressions of concentric rings of `fields' where, say, a static charge `caused' the 6 simulatneous spokes to `do the same thing' for the `same amount of time', thus resulting in symetry? If this were the case our `serializing' mind (EG Left hemisphere) would have duped us into believing that something had taken place `faster than the speed of light' ... when `mere' synchronicity or simultenaity may have been at work. ;-]

Are there thousands and thousands of
different cores on which snowflakes grow?

I once saw a Phd thesis presentation by a guy (B. Arbuckle) studying water at Cornell U. in Olin Hall. There are plenty of `interested parties' who want or `need' to know which way that next still-liquid molecule of water is going to crystalize during the `phase change' to solid. In fiction, KURT VONNEGUT may have`invented' Ice 9 (in _Cat's Cradle_) as a counterpoint of a concern his brother Bernard <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernard_Vonnegut> just may have had when he was following up on his insight that silver nitrate crystals bore a rather uncanny resemblance to ice crystals and that they might `teach' water `the pattern' to form ice.

Another amazing evidence of the beauty and complexity of nature.

Yep!
