Dear Neil:
Thanks for the reply. What follows is my original reply. But, I spent
about 2.5 hr downloading and installing NI-DAQmx 8.6. I now have all
3 devices apparently working properly, so perhaps my original problem
is not important any more.
I do still have a new problem, though. When I run/test a task under
NI-DAQmx Tasks (the section above Devices & Interfaces), the chart
option does not work. I see values OK, but I get an empty, generic
chart. How do I get the chart to work as it did in the old software
when the "Test" icon was clicked?
Also, I notice that there are both Labview Runtime Engine 7.0 and 7.1 on my computer. Are they both necessary?
I have not recorded data with VI-Logger yet, but it looks right when I pull up a task under VI-Logger Tasks.

Your understanding is close. My original installation CD is labeled
NI-DAQmx Software for Windows 2000/NT/XP Ver 7.5. I am running Win
2000. After installing the 8451 (NI-845x software for windows Ver
1.1), the 6009 and 9211 had red X's in the Devices & Interfaces and
the NI-DAQmx tasks sections. Trying to run the test mode results in an
Error 4501 exactly as reported in another thread (VI Logger Task Error... by AMY110970). In that thread they suggested installing VI-Logger 2.0.1, which I did. Afterward, my NI-DAQmx tasks in MAX still had big red X's
and when I tried to test, I got "Error
-89130 occurred at DAQ Assistant".
At that time, I was mainly interested in running the 8451 to talk to a
battery. I developed my Borland C code for it just fine and it ran
perfectly. Then I needed the 6009 and 9211 to monitor its charger, so
I uninstalled all NI programs using the Windows uninstall and
reinstalled the older CD that came with the 6009. That made the 6009
and 9211 work just fine, but the uninstall had removed the DLL that I
needed for the 8451, so that program would no longer work.
I now need to use the 8451 with the 6009 and 9211 (to do thermal
testing of the battery/charger combination). I could not find the dll
alone on the CD so I installed whole the 8451 cd again. Of course that
killed the 6009 and 9211. As expected, installing VI-Logger 2.0.1 made
matters worse, as before. I then tried deleting the 6009 and 9211 from
the Devices & Interfaces list, hoping it would wake up and find the
6009 and "reinstall it" somehow. No luck. It no longer appears in the
list.
If I use Windows Device Manager to remove the 6009, windows finds it
again and reinstates it under NI devices in the Device Manager. My
next step, I am thinking, is to save NI-854x.DLL where it cannot be
removed, uninstall NI applications and reload the old CD. Do you have
a better idea?
There are no more NI devices in the system, only the three I mentioned. I removed NI-DAQmx Base 1.4 and am installing NI-DAQmx 8.6.
