instrument assistant

I'm new to the instrument assistant, and fairly new to LabVIEW overall.  What I'm wondering is this:

Can you add inputs to the instrument assistant and use them inside the
commands for added flexibility.  For example, I want to make a
"read channel" command.  If my device has 32 channels, I would
have to make 32 copies of this particular command, one for each
channel.  It seems like there must be a way to pass the channel
number, or whatever other input you may want, into the instrument
assistant.
