More like a two-way one-way street, where both ways lead to Sun.
Not exactly the best of scenarios for the average developer -- and
Microsoft would most certainly protest.

They would surely be a *very* silly doing so.

Probably. But MS has done it before; the notion that a Netscape
icon somehow damages the desktop comes to mind.

That's a *different* very silly thing. :D

(They're partly right; that kinda damaged their credibility. :-) )

I'm entirely not unsympathetic with MS's argument in the
general case, given the amount of useless, broken, crud
so many vendors preinstall on computers.

Still, those usually aren't desktop icons either. The real
issue was using the desktop of new computers as a
billboard, something MS wanted to monopolize.

They put a lot of effort
into fast, easy platform interop in .NET;

FSVO "platform", presumably.

It works for any platform whose APIs are in C...

.... or use COM. :D

I'd have to do some
experimentation with Mono and GTK# to see how well it
works with Windows, or .NET, C#, and WinForms/WebForms to
see how well *that* works with Linux.

I don't think WebForms are an example of this, actually;
that's all managed, very like Java.

WinForms are a layer over Win32, but they aren't
trying to be a portable layer. A different layer over
X11 could be designed that would work well, I
should think.

and *their* framework
depends heavily on this in some places.

Ultimately, all platforms have to get to native code eventually.
:-)

Well, you can do more or less of the work in managed code;
Java does more of it there, .NET less.
