Re: Can I install VB 3.0 on Vista?

Is it 64-bit Vista? If so, VB3 (or apps created by it) won't work since the
64-bit Vista editions don't have a 16-bit subsystem (and VB3 is 16-bit). If
it's the 32-bit Vista, you'd have to give it a try. While 32-bit Vista has
16-bit application support, many (possibly most) 16-bit installers don't
work. So, as Mike already stated, you'd have to try and see if it will
install. VB3 install shouldn't overwrite any Vista system files since VB3
is 16-bit. Your best bet is to do as Mike suggested, create a restore point
prior to installing VB3.

You can set up the VB6 IDE to have a VB3 "feel" by setting it as SDI...
Tools > Options > Advanced tab, and check the SDI Development Environment
option.

No idea. Try it and see. They're just metal boxes. Can't do any harm
that cannot be repaired. And it might work fine.

I don't understand what you mean. Do you mean it might simply be a
matter of uninstalling VB 3 if something goes wrong? Could installing
VB 3.0 overwrite any new Vista system files? I do not want to end up
reinstalling Vista.

It would be nice if I could put VB 3 and 6 on Wine on Linux some
day. Do you have some experience of that? I am thinking of buying one
more machine to run Linux with Open Office.

By the way, why do you want VB3 on Vista when you don't want VB6 on
it? What's the idea of that?

If possible, I could put both of them, but my ignorance makes me
suspect that there is a risk that the two won't work well together.
We have a lot of old code which is good and can be "upgraded" to VB 6
with little effort. Since I am not an expert in VB, I prefer to keep
the old stuff in the same format. I like the simplicity of the VB 3
IDE unlike the complicated VB 6 which gives me very little debugging
space and consumes a lot of space for things I don't need to see -
perhaps I have just not learnt how to resize or close some of those
things.

Thanks for your response.
