Don't worry. I think you'll find the night course will work during the
day as well ;-)
What I was wondering is would I be able to get
support from this group?
Certainly. In fact you couldn't be in a better place. VB5 is almost
identical to VB6 in most respects, although of course it doesn't have
the few extra functions and things that VB6 has. There is nothing
missing that you cannot live without, though. Some of the code you'll
find posted here might not work "out of the tin" in VB5 (code that
uses one of the new to VB6 functions such as the Replace function, for
example), but most of it will. If you ever come across a problem in
that area and you post a question we'll tell you how to perform
exactly the same job in VB5.
I notice everybody seems to be posting about vb6.
Would knowing vb5 be useful for picking up vb6?
Certainly. In fact almost all your VB5 code will be exactly the same
as its equivalent VB6 code. There is virtually no difference at all in
most cases. Unless a piece of code uses one of the few functions that
are new to VB6 then if you posted such code here nobody would know
which version (VB5 or VB6) you used to write it.
I'm just an old retired guy looking for
things to do besides my photography.
Same here. except I can't do photography ;-)
If I could learn vb5 I'd sign up for a
course in vb6. Is vb6 the latest version?
Yes. It is the latest version of what most people call "Classic VB".
The newer dotnet programming application that also goes by the name of
Visual Basic or VB in its various guises (all usually with .net in the
name somewhere) is very different.
By the way, you would be well advised to check that your copy of VB5
has the latest service pack installed. There were quite a few little
problems in VB5 that were fixed by the service packs. I'm not sure
what the last service pack was for VB5 but I thnk it was SP3. When you
open up VB5 use the menu item Help / About Microsoft Visual Basic and
it will tell you what service pack is installed. If you don't have SP3
or later (I think SP3 is the latest one for VB5?) then you'll be able
to download it from the Microsoft MSDN site. Post again if you have
trouble finding it.
