Dag, I know a substantial number of people who would disagree with you; they
firmly believe that "DotNet Is The Root of All Evil". I'd add a smiley, but
it's not a joke...

I will add this, however: somehow we managed to struggle along, largely
automating society, from the 1950s through the 1980s, using development
tools in which globals were often the only means of communicating between
programs and processes.
