Microsoft's Upcoming Vista To Support Legacy VB6 Apps

Yes, that's being discussed in one of the other
groups. One question with that, from a
shareware author's point of view, is whether
non-.Net "real executables" might be harrassed
by security warnings and limited permissions on
Vista.

Also in the article, this odd bit:

"If VB6 developers don't switch to VB.NET or another .NET language, they
won't get to play with ASP.NET, Ajax, or any of the other new .NET toys,"
observed Directions on Microsoft's DeMichillie."

I don't see what AJAX has to do with .Net. The
speaker makes it sound like AJAX is their product.

In case you or others are interested:

I've also been looking into the Monad thing lately
(which Michael D. Ober mentioned). It's apparently a full
command line system for admin, aimed at Unix
converts and people who like using the command line.
It also provides MS a chance to convert the command line
system to .Net and phase out their DOS and pseudo-DOS
cmd.exe.

The Monad command line is actually a new system
that uses mini C# applets, in place of the common
Unix executables. What I'm still not clear about is
whether VBScript and the WSH will still be available.
As far as I can tell the plan seems to be similar to
what they're saying about VB6 - a kind of black
sheep status where WSH can still be used but will no
longer be developed. Part of Microsoft's strategy
for phasing these things out seems to be to just
ignore them rather than taking a position on them,
as if to say, "Well, sure, you can run VB and WSH in
Vista....if you're a loser."
